Directed by Michael O’Brien and Mike Schmiedeler, Don’t Turn Your Back on Friday Night is an impressionistic and deeply compelling look at 30 years of Ike Reilly’s life, songs, and stories. The film explores the former gravedigger and hotel doorman’s journey through music, faith, family, booze, and financial hardship, revealing the heart of a fiercely original artist.
Executive produced by Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine, the documentary introduces audiences to Reilly’s remarkable story. At age 40, Reilly landed a major label recording contract and, in true rock & roll fashion, bought his family a dream home before taking his band on the road, where they became what The New York Times called “one of the best live bands in America.”
Despite nine albums, a devoted cult following, and widespread critical acclaim, mainstream commercial success has remained elusive.
Drawing from more than 40 years of archival footage and performances, the film masterfully weaves together songs and stories that reveal a complicated, charismatic, and formidable artist. Through struggles with addiction and financial instability, Reilly ultimately finds redemption in music, art, and family, as his three sons begin performing alongside him.
Following the screening, stick around for a post-film Q&A with Ike Reilly, Michael O’Brien, and Mike Schmiedeler, then enjoy a LIVE SET by Ike Reilly and friends.
Don’t miss this unforgettable evening of film, conversation, and live music at Vickers Theatre!
