Out There is so excited to celebrate Fat Tuesday and the end of Mardi Gras season with a double feature of two short films by the legendary documentary filmmaker Les Blank.
Come early for a DJ set by Out There where we`ll be playing all 45s from New Orleans from 5-6pm, and we`ll make some King Cake to share with everyone too! More info on the films below and we hope to see you at the movies!
The Blues According To Lightin` Hopkins 1968 | 31 Minutes | Trailer
Les Blank creates a vivid portrait of bluesman Lightin` Hopkins through a vital collection of musical performances and oral histories.
Blank gets up close to the man with his camera, brilliantly capturing Hopkin`s engaging personality, his fierce music, and the textures of his life and community.
Always For Pleasure 1978 | 57 Minutes | Trailer
Les Blank’s raucous tribute to the sights, sounds, and flavors of New Orleans is perhaps his most sustained representation of pure joy.
A nearly orgiastic celebration of life in that vibrant city, Always For Pleasure leaps from the eye-popping colors and feathered costumes of Mardi Gras to the rhythmic rituals of a funeral procession, making time for interludes to visit crawfish boils and ruminate on the perfect red beans and rice recipe.
Naturally the film is also wall-to-wall with live local music, including appearances by Professor Longhair and the Native-American-inspired group Wild Tchoupitoulas, who are joined onstage by The Neville Brothers.
